What Does a Coach Do?

A good coach fills many roles: Planner, educator, analyst, ally, cheerleader, motivator, accountability enforcer, perpetual learner, listener, and more. Simply put, a good coach should be there to help optimize any individual’s performance. Whether you’re running your 10th Boston Marathon, or your first 10km, training to finish the PMC, or conquer a criterium, creating a training plan that suits your individual needs–based on your unique history, abilities, goals, and availability–is the coach’s primary role. But a good coach should offer more, insight into how and why each workout is performed to aid in the training process, to offer support and encouragement when things are tough, and be your loudest cheerleader when things are going great. Having a coach can simplify your life by taking the stress and worry about what training to do on any given day, thus giving you a plan you can fully invest in.
